ACTION MAN
Pierce Turner 'Action' (Verge)

The Wexford bard treats us to a new EP, which showcases his songwriting talents and distinctive vocal style to excellent effect. Turner is as important and valuable songwriter as MacGowan or Moore. On Action, he's accompanied by an orthadox band and a string section for four glorious vignettes into Pierce's world.

Opening track, "Who's Your Advisor?" ponders the confidante, the one you turn to when "you and I are torn apart from too much matrimony". "Mr. Smith" touches on one of his favourite topics, gossip, while "Wednesday" is good soaring fun. Possibly the pick of the bunch, however, is his breathtaking version of Nirvana's "Lithium", as Pierce and the string quartet give the tune a makeover, Turner's vocals adding a palpable sense of pathos to Cobain's lyrics. Action is musically ambitious, lyrically astute and could well give the Manhattan dweller his first bona fide chart success.
