We had to wait a while for this to come out but it was well worth it. Many of these songs had appeared in Pierce's concerts but hadn't been committed to disc and I for one was curious how they would fit into a studio album format.
Originally planned to be called Life In A Day, this album simply sums up Pierce Turner today. How he captures the essence of ordinary life with characters he creates in Busy Man [superb live], Beyond The Blue, Fishin' and, of course, Life In A Day ... pure genius. Pierce is compared to many artists, especially Van Morrison, but no-one can write like Mr Turner. Sorry Van, but Pierce is the man.
Not sure why Snakes & Ladders is included here, probably for those people who didn't get hold of the soundtrack album, but for those of us who did it's unfortunate duplication. Never mind, Oh Ireland is a wonderful masterpiece that obliterates any minor gripes. Brilliant in concert, this song is done so well on disc that it almost matches the live performance. In fact, one of the main pleasant surprises about this album was hearing how the songs translated so well into the studio, underlining the quality of Pierce's live performances in that there isn't a yawning chasm between the quality of the two. Definitely one for the collection and one to be played and played and played until the silver coating comes off [make a copy just in case]!! |
