The Other Guys
Pierce Turner hits bigtime with song in Will Ferrell Movie "The Other Guys" no 1 U.S. box office hit
When Pierce Turner's phone rang last November just before his return to Ireland for his Christmas tour. He listened calmly as the woman at the other end of the line explained that she was a musical director and wondered if he could read music and sing with an Irish accent. Pierce thought that he sensed that a bit of leprachaunish rubbish would be coming next, but answered in the affirmative assuming that this was a minor job if it was anything. But one never knows what's going to come from a phone call when you're in Manhattan. Then very casually the woman says that she is working on a Movie with Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton and that they needed Irish singers for a full day shoot and a full day of recording, would Pierce be interested? Now she had his attention and he replied with an even greater affirmation.

Three days later he was in a very expensive recording studio uptown, with five other singers of very varied backgrounds, one opera singing tenor, three professional session singers with Broadway backgrounds and two Irish Americans that played in trad outfits. They were all studying the music and lyrics of the song that they were about to record, a song called "Ugly Sunday" which was an hilarious send up of the cliché Irish tragedy song about British Occupation and the cruel treatment thereof. A pile of paperwork was produced for urgent signing, and with zero time to read anything pens were put to paper and as the Lawyer exited in came Will Ferrell in his tan coloured ski jacket. "Oh are these the singers!" everyone jumped to their feet to say hello to the star of the proceedings and Ferrell was a genuinely warm host.

Because Pierce was the only actual Irish person there, he was called into the main studio where the composer of the song was sitting at the piano. Will asked Pierce to sing it the way it would be sung at an Irish sesuin. Will listened as Pierce did his best to comply and in between told the Wexfordman how he loved to go to Ireland and that the last time he was in a pub in Longford where his ancestors came from that they wouldn't let buy a drink all night long, Pierce suggested jokingly that the next day they probably said, that cheap fecker didn't buy one drink all night. Will seemed a little worried at this suggestion.

The recording session took all day to complete with the Director of the Movie Adam McKay sitting in the control room and changing the lyrics constantly until he got the humorous effect that he desired, periodically asking Pierce what would happen at a real Irish sesuin?. Everyone was pleased with the results and the day was wrapped successfully.

Two days later everyone was in McManus',the Chelsea Bar on the corner of 19th Street an 7th Avenue. Now you could see how big this Movie was. Mobile dressing rooms, massive equipment trucks and catering tents were all over the sprawling web of assistants, cops and fans who had somehow sussed out the location which was now completely blacked out and surrounded with canvas tents. Pierce came up to corner and as he stood there wondering where he should go, a complete stranger came over to him and said "Hi Pierce, follow me to the costume department" Apparently her job was to look out for the singers when they arrived and she knew them to see from those curious passport style photographs that had been taken of them back in the recording studio.

The singers were arranged around a couple of wooden tables littered with pints of Guinness, in the old rustic bar, a landmark establishment suitably littered in old black and white photos of New York characters.

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell (both Irish American cops) were sitting up at the bar having a conversation about a Ponzi scheme that some accountant was attempting out in New Jersey. Malachy Mc'Court (Franks brother) was supposedly guiding the sing song and after he tapped Will on the shoulder he stood up and turned towards the singers to take the lead as they hummed behind him aca-pela. Pierce said that it was quite hard to keep a straight face, while Will Ferrell sang the ridiculous lyrics with his back to Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg was trying to distract them by ardently doing his Markyl Mark rap act up on the bar stool behind Ferrell's head, gyrating his hips and grabbing his crotch. It was plain to see that the crew were experienced at working with Will Ferrell, the atmosphere was so playful and again the director constantly fiddled with the dialogue between the two actors. Changing the lines until they struck the right balance of humour. Ferrell was dry and innocent, Wahlberg was tough and impatient. Both were very impressive at adapting to the new lines, occasionally glancing at the script which they kept underneath their behinds.

After eight hours of tinkering and breaking for dinner. The scene was complete. Pierce got quite friendly with Will, but Mark kept his distance. It dawned on Pierce that nearly all the power brokers on this film were Irish American. Also that they were extremely talented and not of the corny school. That felt good.
