You Are Leaving

And so today you are leaving
The U-Haul is packed to the ceiling
You’ll take the road to Wyoming
One more door is closed again

It’s come to the end of the season
Everyone’s brooding or teething
Something inside me is grieving
Falling with the autumn wind

The silent echo in your place
Rings of failure
The cruelty of New York
And its craziness
Us addled dwellers running round
With holstered yoga mats
You could’ve been a better cure
Than any psychologist

You leave me with a memory
But nothing I can touch or feel
You remind me of Wyoming
All silent sky and mountain

You’re going to see your mother
Your grandma and your brother
I bet they’ll all be wondering
If you will stay where they belong

The silent echo in your place
Rings of failure
The cruelty of New York
And its craziness
Us addled dwellers running round
With holstered yoga mats
You could’ve been a better cure
Than any psychologist

And so today you are leaving
The U-Haul is packed to the ceiling
You’ll take the road to Wyoming
One more day is closed again
